REVIEW

York, Glen Studios

Dateline: 5th February 2003

It's all quiet on the western rock front. All you punters laying back and letting the crap roll over yourselves. WAKE UP! What's happening? Radio 2 is the new Radio 1? Radio 1 had finally gone to the Dogz. Lament at the passing of Lamaq, only YOU are the losers, fight back for Christ's sake. If you want mediocrity just listen to any band whose name begins with "THE" 'cos they only have one tune each.

But what's this? A lung in the post? It must be SCARY's letter box. Out in the street you can hear the amps being cranked up to 11 and the brick walls begin to vibrate. Oh yes, this is the house of SCARY, the palace of rock darkness. You are about to witness the noise that plays on the Devil's walkman.

We've waited six months for the Bad Bears to come out of hibernation and, thank the gods of holey black clothing, tonight they're back. Spitting songs from a well-thumbed set list faster than Liam Gallagher can spit teeth, they take the audience by the ears and squeeze every last drop of complacency from their brains.

OK we've heard most of it before, Oasis, REM, Staind, Nickleback, all covered with preposterous excellence. But here and there they pepper the salad with golden nuggets that you almost forgot. Feeder's "Seven Days in the Sun" and a sublime version of their "Oxygen", a stunning cover of 3 Colours Red's "Beautiful Day", a breathtaking Stiltskin's "Inside".

We truly were not worthy. This was Rock-Made-Flesh, Flesh-Made-Light. Blinding, searing rock-light that cauterises your brain, flushing out every last trace of dreary dance pap. Catch SCARY live, they will be your music epiphany.
